In a telephone interview given to NTV television Unal told the Turkish television media outlet how he and Fahmi were caught in the city of Aleppo on August 20. During that time intense fighting raged in the Syrian city. Both Unal and the reporter that was with him were badly injured in the August 20 Aleppo fighting.
The cameraman managed to carry his colleague to safety into an apartment building in Aleppo. There some people took care of Fahmi. When Unal left to get more help he was captured and handed over to the Syrian government forces. For the past three months Unal was locked and left alone in a prison cell. He was not treated bad but ended up only eating bread and potatoes in order to survive.
