An Australian elderly passenger fell in the sea from a Princess Sun cruise

The ship left Fremantle in Western Australia six days ago. The overboard occurred when the cruise ship was approximately 100 nautical miles southeast of Singapore. The Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) in Canberra was contacted. The captain turned the ship around to conduct search and rescue operations after he was informed. CCTV showed person overboard. It took an hour to return to the spot where the man went overboard. A passenger onboard explained in a tweet the ‘sea [was] calm with little current’.

Indonesian search and rescue authorities released the cruise ship after her crew had searched until dark for the missing man. The passenger could not be located. There is no explanation how or when the passenger went overboard. Sun Princess’ arrival in Sydney will be delayed and the next cruise will be impacted. The last overboard from the Princess Sun occurred around a year ago when a woman was recovered after approximately 45 minutes in the water. Princess Sun  is a Sun-class cruise ship built in 1995, the lead ship of her class that includes sister ships Sea Princess and the P&O ships Pacific Explorer and Oceana.311 people have gone overboard from cruise ships in the last 18 years.
