License plates sold at record price at auction in Dubai

A license plate with the number 7 sold Saturday in Dubai for 55 million dirham at the Emirates Auctions charity at the Four Seasons hotel in Jumeirah. Some people want to have a single digit number at the car.The plate’s buyer wished to remain anonymous. The company has previously held the record for most expensive plate sold, auctioning off the 1 license plate in 2008 for 52 million dirhams, or about $14.2 million U.S., according to the Guinness Book of World Records. And now, it was more , so again a world record!

The license plate auction benefits the charity 1 Billion Meals Endowment, founded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The proceeds would go to provide food. The UAE has made a habit of auctioning off vanity plates, used by the ultrarich to show off their status and wealth. They are considered „noble numbers.” Outside of the Middle East, the VIP licence plates have also fetched staggering prices: earlier this year, the single-letter “R” plate was purchased for HK$25.5 million ($3.2 million or ~Rs 263 million) at an auction in Hong Kong
