A strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck south and central Mexico, Friday


Emergency warning systems were activated in Mexico City, some 348 kilometers (216 miles) from the center of the quake  Video on social media showed buildings shaking in Mexico City.The government said some superficial damage had occurred, but did not immediately report any fatalities. In Oaxaca, where the epicenter was located, authorities reported some structural damage to buildings in two towns, Pinotepa Nacional and Santiago Jamiltepec. Secretary of the Interior Alfonso Navarrete tweeted that Oaxaca, Chiapas, Michoacán, Puebla and Mexico City had not reported any major damages. No tsunami threat was detected, according to the US National Weather Service.

A 5.9-magnitude aftershock hit nearly an hour later.The Mexico City Government reminded residents via Twitter to check for damage, close gas valves, and disconnect energy sources when returning home. Over 300 people, including schoolchildren, died from a powerful earthquake in central Mexico last September. Mexico had 7 earthquakes in the past 24 hours. A military helicopter carrying Mexico’s interior minister and governor who were overseeing the damage left after the strong earthquake hit the city has crashed killing two people but the senior officials survived. They were not seriously harmed in the accident that happened as the helicopter was attempting to land.
