Man rescued from sea after 24 days in Carribean

A 47-year-old Dominican man who was lost at sea for 24 days after currents pushed his sailboat out to sea when he was making repairs off the island of St. Martin in the Netherlands Antilles, where he lives ,was recovered after being spotted asking help by a passing plane. A passing container ship picked him up about 120 nautical miles northwest of the port city of Cartagena. Elvis Francois survived eating ketchup, garlic powder and Maggi seasoning cubes and drinking rainwater collected with a cloth.. He failed to set a fire on the boat but he scrawled ‘help’ on boat hull and signalled with a mirror.

He was in good health following a medical checkup. “I called my friends, they tried to contact me, but I lost the signal. There was nothing else to do but sit and wait,” Francois told to Colombian authorities. He was handed over to immigration authorities for his return home to Dominica.
