A car ploughed on the people at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro


The beach had been crowded because it had been a 40-degree day.One eight-month-old baby was killed and at least 15 people have been injured. Medical staff spent 50 minutes trying to resuscitate the child. The injured have been transported to Rio’s Miguel Couto and Souza Aguiar hospitals for treatment. “People wanted to lynch the driver, but police at the scene prevented it. There were a lot of people run down.”


Accident on the Copacabana Beach

Local police commander Colonel Angelotti said. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Antonio de Almeida Anquim, tried to escape before being detained by police. He told them he had not been drinking but had lost control of his car. The driver is now facing 18 counts of attempted murder. Authorities reportedly found anti-epilepsy medication inside the car. Police are investigating, but initial reports indicate that it is not terror related. Local news has reported that the driver was involved in another incident two years ago when a motorcycle he was riding hit the back of a van.
