Commuters were making their way to and from the city’s main train station about 4.40pm when the white SUV collided with pedestrians between Elizabeth and Swanston streets. Witnesses have described the chaos. “All you could hear was, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,” a witness said. “I was heading to my office on Flinders Street and the impact I actually heard inside my office, then the next thing I heard screaming and came running straight outside,” a man who works in the area said.

Fourteen people have been injured.There were bodies on the ground and people running up to them. People were flying everywhere. Everybody was screaming and crying. The whole incident lasted about 15 seconds. The driver, dressed in blue jeans and a white T-shirt, appeared to be unconscious. The police arrived and dragged him from the car. Police have confirmed the driver of the vehicle and a second man were arrested. “At this stage, we believe it was a deliberate act. The motivations are unknown. It’s still early days in the investigation,” Victoria Police Commander Russell Barrett told to media. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his “thoughts and prayers” are with the victims and the emergency services workers tending to them.
