Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, 60, is now the world’s third richest person behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Ranked on the daily-updated Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Adani first tried his luck as a diamond trader. He is believed to be worth approximately $137 billion and has added $60.9 billion to his fortune in 2022 alone. Adani Group controls companies ranging from ports and aerospace to solar energy and coal, venturing into everything from data centers to cement, media and alumina.. Last year it promised to invest $70bn in green energy and become the world’s largest renewables producer, focusing on areas that Prime Minister Narendra Modi deems crucial to meeting India’s long-term goals.
Adani’s company is also the country’s biggest airport operator. Last week, Adani increased his influence by buying a 29% stake in television network New Delhi Television (NDTV). Adani is described on his wesite as “a first-generation entrepreneur [who] is driven by the core philosophy of infusing ‘growth with goodness’ through his vision of nation-building”. Adani has increased his charitable giving, promising to donate $7.7 billion for social causes to mark his 60th birthday.
