A record single-day number of daily Covid cases in the U.S.


COVID-19 is raging throughout the U.S. as omicron accounts for 58 percent of all cases in the country.The U.S. has reported a record single-day number of daily Covid cases, with more than 1 million new infections reported Monday. It almost doubled the previous record of about 590,000, set four days before. It also has the highest seven-day average of daily new cases in any country tracked by Johns Hopkins. More to know, many Americans are relying on tests taken at home with results not reported to authorities. Omicron appears to replicate much more efficiently than previous variants. Although evidence suggests Omicron is generally more mild and less lethal than other strains, the volume of new cases has been followed by an increase in hospitalizations. About 98,000 Americans are hospitalized with Covid-19. In recent weeks, the U.S. has seen the omicron variant starting to edge out the previously dominant delta strain of the virus.


U.S. health officials have urged Americans to get vaccinated. Since the pandemic began in 2020, the U.S. has reported about 56 million total COVID-19 cases and experienced 827,748 deaths. In New York City, an analysis of COVID-19 data found that roughly 1 out of every 50 Manhattan residents tested positive for the virus in December. Omicron has created chaos in the economy. The airline industry was particularly hard hit and reporting significant issues. India comes in second place for daily cases, with 414,000 people diagnosed on May 7, 2021.
