This is particular useful to ban extremist or hate groups if really needed.

Now Twitter has used this new “feature” for the first time. When someone from Germany tries to see tweets from an extremist neo-Nazi group will see the following message instead: “Tweet withheld. This Tweet from @hannoverticket has been withheld in: Germany. Learn more.”

The German government requested Twitter to block the Twitter account for right-wing group named Besseres Hannover. The extremist group was shut down by the government and is currently being investigated. The members of the group are charged for various crimes.

When asked about the country specific censorship Twitter counsel Alex Macgillivray responded “We announced the ability to withhold content back in Jan. We don’t want to withhold content; It’s  good to have tools to do it narrowly and transparently. We’re using it now for the first time re: a group deemed illegal in Germany.”
