Prosor further stated that a leader who leads an outlaw country which is a serial and adamant violator of the fundamental principles of the rule of law did not have a place in the hall. He added that it would be a disgrace and a shame to give such a person (read President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) a chance to speak on a topic that had so much importance.
The Israel envoy said that letting the Iranian President address the United Nations on an important topic like rule of law would be like giving a pyromaniac an appointment as the fire chief. On Wednesday, the Iranian president is scheduled to address the General Assembly. This time round, there will be no delegates from Israel present to storm out when he starts speaking as it is Yom Kippur.
Reuben Rivlin, the Knesset Speaker, has made calls to the international community to boycott the address made by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Earlier in the day, President Ahmadinejad had stated that Israel did not have any roots in the Middle East history. Before his address to the UN, he further added that Israel only represented a disturbance for his country and that disturbance will be eliminated. In an interview with The Washington Post during the weekend, he said that the Arab-Israeli conflict should be resolved by giving the Palestinians a chance to vote out the “Zionist regime”.
Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Secretary – General had a meeting with the Iranian President on Sunday. During the meeting, he reportedly warned the President the result and dangers of making incendiary rhetoric.
In the past years, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has used most of his speeches that he addresses to the United Nations to defend his country’s nuclear program. He has also used the same speeches to attack Europe, the United States of America and Israel. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has questioned the Holocaust and he has even made his opinion known that he does not believe that 19 hijackers were responsible for the September 11 bombings that happened in the in the United States in 2001.
