Eleven escapees have so far been detained. Inmates at the Arcahaie jail don’t wear uniforms, making the remaining fugitives hard to identify. It isn’t clear how many of the escaped prisoners were convicted of serious crimes and how many were in the prison awaiting trial. “The government condemns in the strongest terms the incidents at Arcahaie civil prison, which was targeted on Saturday by a mutiny,” read a statement released by the Haitian government. Police asked residents of the coastal area to follow authorities’ instructions as a manhunt intensified. Haiti experienced another major jail break only two years ago when a gang attacked the Croix-des-Bouquets prison and freed hundreds of inmates. The US Embassy in the capital warned American citizens to avoid the area.
