He was the co-owner of the web hosting company PRQ. Together with Peter Sunde and Fredrik Neij he founded the famous BitTorrent site “The Pirate Bay”.

Pirate Bay co-founder failed to attend The Pirate Bay hearing back in 2010 because of poor health. Although he was too sick to leave the hospital he left without notice and vanished. Because he failed to appear at a subsequent hearing the Court of Appeal ruled out a verdict. Svartholm has to spend one year in jail. He also received a $1.1 million fine.

Svartholm was arrested in Phnom Penh (the capital of Cambodia). Police had an international arrest warrant for his name after he failed to return to Sweden to serve a 12 month jail sentence received earlier this year. Gottfrid Svartholm was found in an apartment above the Cadillac Bar. He was known to have stayed on the riverfront in the past.
