It was found at that moment that the fire alarms had been previously deactivated without warning in their building. During the 30 minutes of the evacuation, the shirts designed to protect athletes from the mosquito-borne Zika virus had been stolen. At least a laptop disappeared too. “We did lose some shirts and a couple of laptops, one on the fifth floor from a cycling official and one in the office downstairs,” the Australian Olympic Committee spokesman Mike Tancred said.
Australian team chef de mission Kitty Chiller saw three men leaving the building with the shirts during the evacuation, but didn’t realize at the time what they were doing. The Australian team are furious. All Olympic medals won by the Australian Olympic team are to be locked in a safe, they decided, to prevent another possible theft. Athletes have been encouraged to use the safe to store valuables such as passports. An investigation is now underway involving Rio 2016 and the Australian Olympic Committee.
