Man killed by meteorite, in southern India

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, issued a statement confirming the death: “A mishap occurred yesterday when a meteorite fell in the campus of a private engineering college in Vellore district’s K Pantharappalli village.” This could be the first ever human fatality due to o meteorite. Even at Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013, when a bright fireball created a huge airblast, more than 1,000 people were injured and thousands of buildings were damaged but there were no fatalities. A list with such events is kept by International Comet Quarterly. The family of the deceased man has been compensated for his death by the government. Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics found a black and pockmarked rock at the bottom of a small crater at the scene of the explosion. On the area there was no smell at all and no fire.
