Now, German authorities believe that the former BND agent was spying on a German parliamentary inquiry.
German media publications revealed that the man was initially suspected to have made an agreement to spy for the Russian intelligence. Only later after he was arrested, he confessed that he really spied for the Americans. Steffen Seibert, a spokesman for German government, had the following to say: “This is a very serious incident. That is why the Federal State Prosecutor has become involved. It is a matter for the Federal State Prosecutor and the investigating Federal Criminal Office now – and it is in very good hands. Spying for foreign intelligence services is not something that we treat lightly.”
The relations between Berlin and Washington have been strained by other such spying scandals and this latest incident will surely make things worst. If the accusations are proved in court Germany could have the biggest scandal involving a German double agent since World War 2.
