CIA’s second tweet was meant to clarify the purpose of the account: “Thank you for the @Twitter welcome! We look forward to sharing great #unclassified content with you.”. The organization’s presence on Twitter generated a lot of feedback. While some people commented not to like the idea, others found it funny and joked that future spy movies could feature CIA tweets that gone wrong or about that get access over CIA’s social media accounts.

The first CIA post from Facebook was a little more serious as they published a photo to memorialize the 70th anniversary of “D-Day.” It is believed that CIA has been monitoring the activity of million of users on Twitter and Facebook at least since 2011. Expert commentators say that the intelligence agency’s main reason to create social media accounts only now was to better engage with the general public.
