About four hours after the tremor, tsunami warnings remained in place for parts of Chile and Peru. Aftershocks of magnitude 6.2 and 6.5 followed.
Even the Chilean government reported no major damage after the tremor, which was felt at the same time in Bolivia and Peru, five deaths have been officially reported, landslides blocked roads and an airport was damaged in downtown Iquique. Additionally, the quake allowed 300 inmates to escape a women’s prison in Iquique.
Tsunami warnings were issued, residents along Latin America’s Pacific coast were evacuated. The earthquake occurred in the exact same place where previously another tremor magnitude 6.2 produced on March 22.
Iquique is known as one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world.
