The sites will delete posts offering to buy or sell guns without performing a background check. In fact, the minors, felons and people who are mentally ill must be prohibited to have access to such announcements. As a first step, an “age gate” will be created, asking visitors to prove they are over 18 when they try to view gun advertising posts or such related forums.
As the second level of security, the sites will flag the posts promoting potentially illegal gun activities. Any post containing a threat to public safety will be also reported to law enforcement. Such measures were asked by more than 230,000 people who sustained a campaign initiated by the gun control group Moms Demand Action. They urged Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom to eliminate the potential illegal gun sales over both networks. The initiative was sustained by the New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman who investigated the gun sales online.
