Akademik Shokalskiy vessel rescue operation was successful

The 52 rescued people celebrated Christmas through the ice. Their spirits remained high.
After the rescue operation, expedition leader Chris Turney expressed his thanks by tweeting: “We’ve made it to the Aurora Australis safe and sound. A huge thanks to the Chinese and the (government’s) Australian Antarctic Division for all their hard work.”
The Aurora Australis vessel will take the passengers to the Australian island of Tasmania in the next two weeks.
The 22 crew members will stay on the icebound vessel waiting until the ice breaks up. They are not in danger and had enough supplies on board. In the last week three icebreakers were dispatched to try and crack their way but all were failed attempts.
