No responsibility was claimed for this attack on Friday but Hezbollah was immediately accused. They denied, however, any link to this action.
What is known is the fact that Mohamad Chatach, killed in this explosion, a senior aide to former prime minister Saad Hariri and a member of Lebanon’s Future Movement Party was an active critic of Hezbollah. Even with minutes before his death in the explosion he tweeted: “Hezbollah is pressing hard to be granted similar powers in security & foreign policy matters that Syria exercised in Lebanon for 15 yrs.” Speaking on a Lebanese television channel, the country’s defense minister described Chatah as
“known for being moderate and for his love of this country.”
