In fact, relations between the US and Venezuela were not so good over the past decade and they have no ambassadors in each other’s capitals since 2010. This is a consequence of Venezuela’s attitude, the “American imperialism” in Latin America being affirmed and accused by the previous President Hugo Chavez. At that time, accusing the US, Chavez said: “Anyone who comes here as an ambassador has to show respect, this is a country that must be respected.”
A statement of the US embassy in Caracas after the actual diplomatic incident said:
“We completely reject the Venezuelan government’s allegations of US government involvement in any type of conspiracy to destabilize the Venezuela government.”
