The scenes were ecstatic when Pope Francis came out in the basilica’s balcony. It was his first public appearance after being elected as the pope. The new spiritual leader has been greeted by thousands of pilgrims from all around the world. They all endured the cold weather and heavy rain to greet the newly elected pope.

He addressed the crowd saying that the responsibility of the conclave was to give Rome a new pope and it appears that the cardinals went as far as to the end of the world to choose me. At least 2/3rd of the votes are required to select a new pope and it took 4 voting rounds to achieve that majority. The new pope, Francis is 76 years old and will be taking over from the recently resigned Pope Benedict XVI.
