On Saturday, the head of the National Electoral Council announced the new date for the election. The announcement came just a day after foreign officials attended the funeral of Mr. Hugo Chavez who died on Tuesday at the age of 58.
Mr. Hugo Chavez left for Cuba in December to get treated for Cancer. Before leaving the country, he nominated his Vice President, Nicolás Maduro to continue the revolution he started and also urged his supporters to give their complete support to Maduro if it was required to hold a special election. After the funeral, Mr. Maduro was sworn in as the Venezuelan interim president.
In the upcoming election, Maduro will be slotted against opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski, who lost the last election to Mr. Chavez back in October, 2012.
The winner of this special election will be the Venezuelan President for the remaining of Mr. Chavez’s term that began this January.
