Firefighters killed in a suspected deliberated explosion in Italy

Three Italian firefighters were killed early Tuesday in a powerful building explosion in the Italian northwestern region of Piedmont, in Quargnento, the Alessandria province.

Three other first responders were injured. The firefighters were responding to a report of an explosion in an unoccupied farm building in Alessandria province when a second, stronger blast occurred. A timer and a gas canister have been found in the rubble, which "makes us think that the explosion was deliberate," prosecutor Enrico Cierci told. The timer was remote-controlled. Authorities were investigating whether the explosion was deliberate.A possible motive was not yet known. The owner of the farmhouse had been questioned by police.
