Three other first responders were injured. The firefighters were responding to a report of an explosion in an unoccupied farm building in Alessandria province when a second, stronger blast occurred. A timer and a gas canister have been found in the rubble, which "makes us think that the explosion was deliberate," prosecutor Enrico Cierci told. The timer was remote-controlled. Authorities were investigating whether the explosion was deliberate.A possible motive was not yet known. The owner of the farmhouse had been questioned by police.
Italy's interior minister, Luciana Lamorgese, visited the site. Italian President Sergio Mattarella offered his condolences to the families of the dead.
