At least 15 people were killed after collapse of a dam at a gold mine in Siberia


At the time they slipped. At least 15 people have died and 13 others are missing. 14 miners were taken to hospital, including three with severe injuries. About 80 workers lived in the cabins impacted by the floods. The dam violated safety regulations and a criminal investigation has been opened. “The hydro-technical facility was self-constructed and, I believe, all rules I can and cannot think of were violated,” Yuri Lapshin, the head of the Krasnoyarsk regional government said.


Dozens of emergency workers, six helicopters and six boats were at the scene and searched for the missing  people. A team of doctors including a neurosurgeon were dispatched to the scene from Krasnoyarsk. Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered officials to provide assistance and investigate the reasons behind the accident. Evacuations were ordered in the village of Kuragino because of the raised water levels from the Seiba River and local flooding. The Sibzoloto holding company has not released any comment on the incident.
