Luxembourg is preparing to allow recreational cannabis

Residents over the age of 18 are expected to be able to buy the drug for recreational use legally within two years. Adults over the age of 18 will be allowed to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis. Minors aged between 12 and 17 would not be criminalized for possessing 5 grams or less of the drug. But “even harsher penalties than now” will be in place at the same time. Home growing cannabis will not be permitted. Schneider said the legislation was likely to include a ban on non-residents buying cannabis in order to dissuade drug-touri

sm. Importing cannabis across the border into the likes of France and Germany would still be illegal. Luxembourg legalized medical cannabis in the summer of 2018. Preparing the next step, Health Minister Étienne Schneider and Justice Minister Félix Braz traveled to Canada in mid-May to learn more about the practicalities of legalizing the drug. The ministers also intend to analyze the cannabis legalization strategy in Uruguay and the decriminalization efforts in Portugal and the Netherlands for any other useful proposals.
