A major gas explosion has caused two buildings to partially collapse in Vienna, Wednesday, shortly after 16:30 o'clock, in the city center.
One of the two buildings now have a massive crater in the front of it. Several floors have collapsed in part. At least 22 apartments, with 44 residents registered to those units, have been damaged by the explosion, officials said. Several people, at least 12, have been injured, two of them seriously. There were no deaths.Emergency services arrived on the scene. Officers in Vienna said affected residential buildings were being evacuated. Streets are covered in dust and debris.
The police said the partial collapse of several floors took place in up to two buildings in the fourth district of the Austrian capital, which borders the city center. Officers cordoned off streets around the scene of the incident as they searched for further victims. More than 100 firefighters and 50 officers are on the scene. The explosion came as the city was already dealing with unseasonably hot weather.
