An elderly woman was hit by a police motorbike escorting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

Irene Mayor, a widow aged 83 was knocked down by a police motorbike escorting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Tuesday in the United Kingdom.

She was taken by air ambulance. She was critical in hospital but stable. Prince William and Kate were on their way to a ceremony in Windsor. The bike was on the wrong side of the road clearing traffic when it hit Irene Mayor in East Sheen, West London, witnesses declared. Photos from the aftermath of the crash show a police bike on its side pointing in the opposite direction to the traffic. Irene lives 300 yards from the accident scene in East Sheen, West London.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were “devastated” when told of the crash. They did not learn of it until after arriving at Windsor. They have sent flowers to the elderly widow. They also have told her daughter Fiona they would like to visit her if she feels up to it. "Their Royal Highnesses have sent their very best wishes to Irene and her family and will stay in touch throughout every stage of her recovery," a statement said. „Irene is always smiling and cheerful. She used to do a lot of voluntary work for the church and her husband Walter used to lead the evening service,” a friend of the accident’s victim told to media.
