Ukrainians voted for comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy

Thanks for all the Ukrainians who did not cast their vote as a joke,' comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.

Zelenskiy , a man with no political experience,  has won the most votes in the first round of Ukraine's presidential elections, as early results revealed. Volodymyr Zelenskiy - who plays the president on TV - got about 30%, with current leader Petro Poroshenko on 16%. They are set to take part in a run-off election next month. Ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko trailed behind with 13 percent. Final results in Sunday’s first round are expected to be announced later Monday. "I'm very happy but this is not the final action," Mr Zelenskiy told to media. He is perceived to have no strong political views apart from a wish to be new and different.

Like the character he plays in a TV sitcom, a schoolteacher turned president, Zelenskiy made fighting corruption a focus of his candidacy. The interior ministry says hundreds of electoral violations have been reported but election officials said the vote took place without significant violations. A total of 39 candidates participated in the presidential election. The next president will inherit a deadlocked conflict between Ukrainian troops and the eastern separatists.
