A Swiss man was declared for short time winner of one million

Andreas Bürkli’s name was pulled out of a drum and announced by German singer Herbert Grönemeyer but Swiss public TV channel SRF apologised after declaring him the winner. It was a mistake, they said. Technical problems occurred. A new draw will be made and the winner will find out after Christmas. Punters had paid 10 Swiss francs (£8) to enter the draw held by Swisslos and 10 players were chosen for the final draw.

The names of potential winners rolled on a screen. All 10 had to be next to their phones, and two additional lots were added because one of the original 10 apparently didn’t answer and another had a phone number missing. One of the additional two couldn’t be contacted, so organisers moved on to lot 13 but  just nine names appeared on screen instead of 10. 11 names were put in the drum instead of 10 and the extra one had been drawn. Mr Bürkli’s name was drawn but he didn’t answer his phone. In fact, the man declared the winner was not eligible. An official from the organisation said Mr Bürkli had taken his misfortune well and appeared to have been a ‘good sport’.
