Scaffolding collapse at Hotel Ritz in Madrid killed one worker, seriously injured others

One man, construction worker, has died and at least eight people have been injured after a scaffolding collapsed. Part of the sixth floor had come down. The body of the victim remained trapped inside the collapsed structure. A concrete deck fell and dragged scaffolding with it from the sixth-floor to a first floor. Witnesses said the scaffolding was possibly hit by a crane. A field hospital has been set up at the scene. One of the injured men is believed to be in a critical condition after suffering a broken skull. He has been rushed to Gregorio Maranon Hospital.

Rescue workers had to free several people trapped under iron and rubble. The nationality of the victims was not immediately known. Officials said the local Madrid police would be investigating the cause of the collapse, which emergency services called “an occupational accident” in a tweet. The hotel was closed at the end of February and was due to reopen at the end of next year. The Ritz was Madrid’s first luxury hotel, located in central Madrid near the Retiro park. It is currently owned by Hong Kong-based Mandarin Oriental. It had famous guests including Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, Zsa-Zsa Gabor, and more recently former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.
