Ten people were injured in a bomb blast at a Saint Petersburg shopping center

A homemade explosive device with the power equivalent to 200 grams of TNT filled with lethal fragments was activated and went off in a Russian Saint Petersburg shopping center on Wednesday. At least ten people were injured. All shoppers have been evacuated. There were not a lot of customers at the time.

Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on the grounds of attempted murder. It was not immediately clear what the motive for explosion was. The bomb had been hidden in a locker where shoppers leave their belongings in a branch of the Perekrestok supermarket chain. At the moment, the lives of those injured are not under threat but one of them was in serious condition.

Emergency in St. Petersburg

No one has claimed responsibility for the explosion at the Perekrestok supermarket in the city’s northwest Kalininsky district. The building containing the supermarket did not appear to have sustained serious damage. Investigators, forensic experts, security services and police officers are working at the crime scene. Previously, the Federal Security Service, or FSB, said seven suspects linked to the Islamic State group were arrested in connection to the alleged plot. The Kremlin said the arrested suspects had planned to bomb St. Petersburg’s Kazan Cathedral and other crowded sites. Saint Petersburg is one of the cities to host the World Cup next summer in Russia, and security services have been stepping up security measures.
