A statement from Thames Valley Police said: “It was found underneath one of the motorway bridges between Junction 15 and 14 at around 7.30am this morning.” One Twitter user described the item as “a black bag smoking and oozing yellow stuff under bridge.” Police cordoned off the motorway while crews from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service have also been sent to the motorway. Motorists have reported being stuck in traffic on the motorway for up to six hours and some pictures on Twitter appear to show people playing football and other sports on the clear side of the carriageway.

A robot was used to investigate what appeared to be a bag or sack at the edge of the hard shoulder under the bridge. more than seven hours after the initial discovery, police said they were still examining the object to see if it was dangerous. The current terror threat level for the UK remains at severe Highways England said traffic was being diverted in both directions and, as the incident entered its fifth hour, vehicles would be turned around and so they could finally exit the motorway.
