A man armed with a knife had taken hostages in Newcastle


The local Byker metro station was closed and all the train deviated or stopped outside. Nearby student accommodation has been evacuated. Police also closed off roads in Byker. Those living and working in the area have been prevented from accessing. Officers said they found a man wielding a knife with something strapped to chest He had one hostage and five members of staff are believed to have been released. There were no reports of injuries at that time. It was understood the knifeman was already known to staff. Police said there is no information or intelligence to suggest the incident is terror-related. The incident is being treated as an isolated one.

At one moment police issued an update and said they “believed that all the hostages have been released and that the man concerned is the only person who remains in the building”.Two army bomb disposal units were also called to the scene. Negotiators currently remain on place.
