Huge explosion with victims at the world’s biggest chemical company, BASF, in Germany

Authorities didn’t know which chemicals exactly could be airborne within the plume of smoke rising from the accident site, but a respiratory irritation was reported. Initial tests for contamination recorded “no elevated readings” Children and teenagers remained in schools. The facility where the explosion occurred is used to unload flammable liquids and liquid gas. At least one was dead and several people were injured. Six more were missing. Officials excluded a possible terrorist action. The factory’s steam crackers have been shut down for safety reasons. The cause of the blast was under investigation. BASF employs 33,000 people at its factory in Ludwigshafen alone. The company produces a wide range of industrial products, including solvents, glues, petrochemicals, plastics and fertilizer.
