One suspect was caught during an operation launched after the attack. He had been wounded and was detained and taken to the main police headquarters in Van city for questioning. Security operations are continuing. Van is a city with a mixed Kurdish and Turkish population and a popular tourist destination. Kurdish militants were suspected of carrying out the attack. After a few hours a second explosion took place near police headquarters in Elazig. It is the fifth explosion in the past two weeks to target police offices in southeastern and eastern Turkey. Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast has seen a surge in separatist violence over the last year following the collapse of a ceasefire between Ankara and the PKK.
