14 children dead in boat disaster in Karelia, northwest Russia

A local resident phoned emergency services after a survivor girl aged 12 reached the village. Emergency crews using boats and helicopters were sent to the scene. At least 36 people had been rescued but fourteen children aged between 12 and 15 died. Initially was believed it was an adult included in the number of victims. Some of the rescued children are being treated at a local hospital for hypothermia. There had been repeated warnings in the days before the storm, advising against any boating on the lake.  A day of mourning has been declared in Karelia on June 20. One instructor has been arrested after the federal investigative committee has launched a criminal investigation. The children were on holiday from Moscow where the bodies have been flown.Their parents have to identify them.
