Carnival with masks removed, Sunday, in Venice

Venetian masks can be made of leather, porcelain or using the original glass technique.

But  masks had to be lifted upon police request at this year’s famous carnival in Venice subjected to extra security measures as they attended Sunday’s Flight of the Angel show. The Italian authorities decided to increase surveillance during the festival following November’s attacks in Paris. Most of the tourists accepted the extra security checks as a necessary inconvenience.

The Carnival of Venice which is among the oldest carnivals in the world was started from a victory of the “Serenissima Repubblica” against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven in the year 1162. In the honour of this victory. The people started to dance and make reunions in San Marco Square. Under the rule of the King of Austria, the festival was outlawed entirely in 1797 and the use of masks became strictly forbidden. After a long absence, the Carnival returned to operate in 1979. Today, approximately 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for the Carnival and one of the most important events is the contest for the most beautiful mask which is judged by a panel of international costume and fashion designers.Venice  Carnival is depicted in the 2009 video game Assassin’s Creed II and in the 2005 video game Sly 3: Honor Among Thievs.

What has happened this year at the carnival in Venice is an evidence of the insecurity of our world now assumed as a tragic dimension.
