The Ukrainian authorities have continued to supply power to the area after Crimea was annexed by Russia last year. This incident was produced by Crimean Tatars, an ethnic group native to the peninsula who oppose Russian rule. They used explosive devices to damage power lines pylons. Ukrainian crews tried to repair lines but they encountered activists blockading the site. Crimean-based power supplier Krymenergo confirmed the power outages. The attack on the power lines is the latest attempt to isolate Crimea since its annexation by the Russians. It is estimated that up to 15,000 Tartars have left Crimea since the region came under Russian control in March 2014. It’s unclear how the actual crisis will be solved but probably military will be used to allow workers’ access in the area.
