The situation is not looking bright at all. According to these recent plans of closure it could happen that more than 600000 people across Powys, Telford, Shropshire and Wrekin will have only one A&E department.
The A&E centers are currently staffed by less qualified medics. This is why the Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is seriously considering this proposal. If it will be accepted and implemented then specialist colleagues at a different A&E ward will help and diagnose patients by internet video calls. The patients that might have potentially serious problems will be sent to walk-in centers.
When reached for comment a spokesperson for Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group had the following to say: “Doctors and health professionals believe one single emergency centre in the area supported by UCCs is the safest way to treat the most seriously ill patients.”
