Confronted with such riots, the President Viktor Yanukovych announced on his website that he had tasked a working group to meet opposition representatives on January 20.
The most significative international reaction related to the actual situation in Ukraine comes from the United States. The National Security Council spokesman Caitlin Hayden accused Ukraine’s government for actions to weaken the foundations of democracy in the country. The White House asks that peaceful protests to be permitted as a form of expression of the civil society. “The US will continue to consider additional steps, including sanctions in response to the use of violence” said Hayden in a statement.
The popular manifestations in Ukraine were beginning after Yanukovych’s decision not to sign a deal with the EU. Actually, a large part of the population is manifesting a lack of confidence in the government asking at the same time the dismissal of the President Yanukovych and a new constitution for Ukraine.
