Active Outdoor Sport, the organizers of the swim race, did not yet comment on the current situation. According to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency the weather conditions were fine and the swimmers had problems most likely because of the water temperature and of the strong currents present around the pier.
One of the rescued men, Darren Skidmore, detailed his experience: “I probably swam a mile in the wrong direction because of the current, but fair play to the RNLI as they were fantastic. I was picked up from the water after about an hour-and-a-half.”
The currents around the pier exhausted dozens of swimmers who then struggled to get back to shore.
