At least seven people have been confirmed dead after a fire broke out in the Banani FR Tower, a 19-storey commercial and office building in Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital, on Thursday.
Six of them died after jumping trying to descend using cables from the 22-floor building. Another suffered fatal burns. Dozens other people were being treated at the hospitals. Many other people were trapped inside. People were seen screaming for help from windows.Dozenss emergency services were at the scene, some of them based on helicopters. At least 19 firefighting units are part of the rescue operation. The fire started on the sixth or seventh floor shortly before 1 p.m. local time, according to the Fire Service spokesperson.
In one video, the fire could be seen burning on at least three floors. The cause of the fire was still unknown as of Thursday evening. From the streets below, thousands of people had gathered in Banani. Bangladesh has a history of fatal building fires, especially in factories. In February, at least 67 people were killed and 40 injured after a fire tore through apartment buildings and chemical warehouses in Dhaka's Chawkbazar area.
