Twenty children were wounded in an attack with hammer at an elementary school in Beijing, Tuesday. Three of them suffered serious injuries.

Police have arrested a male suspect, but said a motive was not yet known. He was apprehended at the scene. The attack took place at the No.1 Affiliated Elementary School of Beijing Xuanwu Normal School, in central Beijing’s Xicheng district. According to the school’s website, it has 2,537 students and 199 teaching personnel. Surnamed Jia, the 49-year-old assailant was a contractor hired by the school for daily maintenance work. His contract was scheduled to terminate at the end of January and had not been renewed.

The Xicheng district said it would work together with other government authorities to carry out a full investigation. The attack comes a day after a Chinese man was put to death for injuring 12 children in a knife attack at a nursery in China. Violent attacks targeting schoolchildren are not uncommon in China. In April last year, a 28-year-old man killed nine middle-school students as they were returning home in one of the country's deadliest knife attacks in recent years.
