Dozens killed in the the worst ever bus accident in India

At least 50 people (sources announced 55), including children and women, were killed when a state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus fell off a ghat road of a hill into a gorge in Telangana’s Jagtial district, India, on Tuesday.

A few critically injured were shifted to hospitals in Karimnagar and Hyderabad. The bus had about 75 passengers and was proceeding from Shanivarapet village to Jagtial via Kondagattu ghat road and Muthyampet villages. The driver lost control over the wheel near Sanivarampet. The bus turned four times on the road and fell into a valley, 30 feet down. Previously, the bus driver received a commendation certificate from TSRTC authorities for his meritorious services. The overcrowded bus was carrying a large number of pilgrims who were returning from Anjaneya Swamy temple atop Kondagattu Hills, about 190 km from Hyderabad. Authorities said brake failure could be one of the reason for the accident.

It was the worst ever bus accident in India. Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao expressed shock over the accident and conveyed his condolences. Telangana Caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has announced financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh each to the families of the dead. District authorities opened a temporary helpline to provide information to the relatives. Congress president Rahul Gandhi has expressed deep shock over the accident.
