Police have arrested Saturday14 people suspected of kidnapping, raping and burning to death a teenage 16-year girl in Chatra district of Jharkhand, India.
The accused abducted the girl from Chatra, a village in eastern Jharkhand state, while she was attending a wedding ceremony on Thursday. The village council leaders imposed a fine of 50,000 rupees ($770) on the accused the next day. After this, suspects beat up the girl’s family members for complaining against them.The accused committed a horrible crime. They found the girl home alone Friday and burned her alive to death. Condemning the incident as “barbaric,”

Chief Minister Raghubar Das directed officials to take strict action against the accused. Policemen have been deployed in the village and the family received protection and financial assistance. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been set up to probe the case. India has been shaken by a series of sexual assaults since 2012. It’s rare for more than a few weeks to pass without another brutal sexual assault being reported. The government has passed a series of laws increasing punishment for rape of an adult to 20 years in prison, A separate case of rape already occurred Friday involving a nine-year-old girl. The accused, said to be around 55, was found hanging in a wood and police said he had likely committed suicide.
