Many containers fell into the sea after a naval collision in the Karachi port


This port’s commercial terminal, where the accident occurred, is operated by private part. Some sources indicated that approximately 55-60 containers from the ships fell into the sea. The sunken containers were carrying imported cars and freight worth millions of rupees.

The 8,000-container Tolten ship was operated by the Hapag-Lloyd company and the 6,350-container Hamburg Bay was operated by Eastern Pacific Shipping. It has not yet been made clear what exactly caused the collision. No injuries were reported. shipping activities at the terminal are reportedly going on as usual after a short pause on Monday. The recovery operation was due to begin Tuesday. There was no damage to the terminal’s cranes. “Karachi Port Trust, the regulatory authority has deployed all available resources for surveying the channel and retrieving containers,” SAPT said in a statement. A board comprising senior officers of KPT, SAPT and Ministry of Ports and Shipping have been formed to investigate the incident. A similar incident had taken place two months ago because of a KPT pilot’s negligence, media informed.
