A huge explosion occurred inside a mosque in Khair Khana area of Kabul, in the city’s police district 17, during evening prayers on Wednesday. The explosion was carried out by a suicide bomber. The powerful explosion shattered windows in nearby buildings. Controversial reports say the number of killed people was from 10 to 50. The Imam of the mosque was among those killed. Dozens were wounded. Ambulances rushed to the spot. Intelligence teams and investigators also had arrived at the blast site. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Suspicions fell on the self-proclaimed Islamic State terrorist group, which condemns Muslims practicing Sufism as polytheists.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the explosion and vowed that the “perpetrators of such crimes will soon be brought to justice and will be punished.” Last week, the IS claimed responsibility for killing a prominent Taliban cleric at his religious center in Kabul. The Taliban confirmed on Wednesday that they had captured and killed Mehdi Mujahid – a former Taliban commanderwho turned against them over the past year- in western Herat province, as he was trying to cross the border into Iran. Afghanistan has been hit by regular attacks since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
